What is heart anxiety?

If you experience excessive fear and worry about your heart health, you are very likely dealing with heart anxiety – also known as cardiophobia. This condition can lead to panic attacks and avoidance behaviors (for instance avoiding physical activity) or repetitively seeking medical attention.

The fear of heart disease is common, but when it becomes overwhelming and interferes with your daily life or sleep, it can be classified as heart anxiety. It is often linked to other anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder.

Physical Symptoms

Some common physical symptoms of cardiophobia include:

  • chest pain
  • chest tension
  • palpitations – this can feel like your heart is racing, skipping a beat, fluttering, or pounding
  • shortness of breath

These symptoms can cause you to believe you are having a heart attack, when in fact you are experiencing an anxiety attack. It is important to understand that anxiety can cause physical symptoms that mimic a heart attack, but they are not indicative of actual heart disease. Heart anxiety can cause significant distress in a person’s life. However, with the right approach, it can be effectively managed and overcome.

Every heart skips a beat, races or pounds. The difference between an anxious and non-anxious person is that an anxious person is hypersensitive to these sensations. A person, who is not anxious, doesn’t even notice it, and if they do, they assign a completely different meaning to it – learn more about that in my free training below. It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms that you believe may be indicative of heart disease. This will help you determine if there is an underlying physical issue that needs to be addressed.

If your doctor confirms, that you are experiencing heart anxiety, there are several strategies you can use to manage your symptoms, reduce your fear and eventually – overcome your heart anxiety permanently.
